Here are some notes on the route
In Relubbus the route turns left at the bottom of the hill (this will keep riders off Tregembo hill and away from traffic).
Through lanes then pretty straight forward to Leedstown across to Praze – then turn right onto Helston road then first left just after passing Clowance – watch the junction as you’ll be approaching at speed.
Climb up through Crowan – join the Releath road and sharp right turn just after junction for Black Rock – this lane takes you down to Coverack bridges (narrow lane so watch out for traffic)
Route joins the Helston-Redruth road then comes off at the Poldark Mines junction after the Wendron decent – watch the junction as you’ll be at speed and road can be busy.
Route then takes you over to Carnkie and Rame – and joins the Helston Falmouth road for a mile or so then right turn after Longdowns garage – down to Mabe Burnthouse and across the roundabout at Asda – again watch out this could be busy through industrial estate – route then takes you down to Penryn – then follows lanes to Mylor Bridge and down Carclew hill – this is a steep narrow decent.
Cross over the Falmouth Truro road and head out to Perranwell and across to Bissoe – up past Twelve heads, Chacewater then up to Blackwater where it does a loop across towards Redruth.
Passing over the Avers roundabout and down into through centre of Redruth – this could be busy with traffic. Turn right at the top of the hill just after the Sandy Lane roundabout then follow to route out towards Stithians lake and Carnmenellis. Then turn right (tight turn) – and route heads back towards Crowan and down from Black Rock to Praze – across to Leedstown then right at cross roads down towards Hayle turn left just after going over A30 bridge (down Water Lane) and pick up the St Erth road and follow lanes back to the start.
The route has a bit more navigation that previous routes – but key places to head for are in bold.
There are Cafes at Mylor Bridge, Bissoe, Twelve Heads & Stithians.
The event HQ is The Carharrack Mills Hall, Carharrack, Redruth TR16 5QW

The Wheal Velocity Legacy ride.
Use your legs to get to the sea, leg-a-sea! (eBikes welcome)
Your participation will leave a lasting legacy to youth cycling in Cornwall as we use this event to raise funds for a new club house. We are the biggest youth cycling club in the south west and we, with your help, can continue to introduce cycling to the children of the South West.
This event, run by volunteers, will start from our proposed site of our new club house at Wheal Jane on the 21st September at 12:00 noon. There are toilets, free parking, registration and first aid at this location
///profiled.hardening.isolating
We have two off-road routes to choose from,
A "South Sea" route at ~ 11 miles, primarily on gravel or cycleways that would be suitable for any off road type bike. Ebikes welcome.
A "North Sea" route at ~35 miles is slightly more challenging in terms of terrain and distance. However it would still be possible on a gravel or cross bike but tending towards MTB's. Again Ebikes are welcome.
Both routes will be waymarked and maps/gpx files will be sent to all participants before the event.

"Mike was a member of the Penzance Wheelers, a good friend and a regular on our weekday rides. Last autumn, not far from Praze an Beeble, whilst on one of our weekday rides he suffered a massive heart attack and despite receiving prompt CPR and the speedy arrival of the emergency services, he did not survive. Mike was an enthusiastic all weather rider and is missed by us all”.
Over the past year the club has also funded first aid training, from club funds, for 15 club membersl
It would be great to see as many cyclists as we can come and join us. Previous years we've had cyclists from all areas of the sport, from racers, club cyclists, ebikers, off roaders - it doesn't matter you'll all be welcome!
We will run these rides under Cycling UK Guidance for youth cyclists joining social club rides
The minimum age for unaccompanied children on any ride or event is 13 years old. Children aged 13 to 17 years old may participate unaccompanied if they have parental permission and a signed Parental Consent form. The ride leader will decide is they think the criteria has been met to allow joining in the ride.
There is no lower age limit if accompanied by a responsible adult acting in loco parentis, but a signed Parental Consent form is still needed - please hand in your signed form to the ride leader on the day of the ride.
It is important that groups and clubs make sure that parents or guardians understand the following points:
• the demands of the cycling activity and that they alone can make the decision about the ability of their child to complete it;
• that the child may cycle with other adults and/or with other children, but that there is also a possibility of the child cycling on its own (for example with treasure hunt events);
• that while Cycling UK extends a welcome to cyclists of all ages and abilities, no special provision for children is made;
• arrangements to get to and from the event are the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian; and
• that DBS checks may not have been done on event organisers or ride leaders (in accordance with legislation).
Cycling UK, its members, agents and other participants may take photographs during the course of an event, mostly for private use but some may be for local or national publicity purposes. It may be difficult to ensure that photographs in which your child appears will not be used in any way. If you have concerns about this please speak to the ride leader or event organiser.

Minutes for the meeting of Penzance Wheelers Cycling Club 19/08/2025
Committee Members Present: Jon Butt, Beth Berriman, David Goodrich, Stuart Hunter, Mike Tonkin, Mark Travis, Sarah Tregear, Matt Southam
Ordinary Members Present: Kev Dawson, Rod James, Dave Phillips, Terry Timms, Darren Rundell.
Apologies: John Fazakerley
Follow up from prior meeting: Jon Butt reminded the committee that club rides had been discussed and that subsequently there had been heated debate on the Facebook page, although this has now subsided, but that comments from the last meeting had sparked debate regarding group rides within the club. David Goodrich had also noted the Facebook debate and commented that there was still a need for the return of a Group 1. No actions were decided.
Wheal Velocity: Rod James was invited to speak about the background of Wheal Velocity Youth Cycling Club. He explained that during his time as One and All Chairman, they negotiated the use of Wheal Jane as a location for the One and All Youth Academy, which eventually became independent and known as Wheal Velocity, although still receiving financial support occasionally from One and All.
Jon Butt explained the current situation, he said that Wheal Velocity were now required to return the current clubhouse to the landowners and were in need of £10,000 to build a new facility on a plot of land still at Wheal Jane. He went on to say that they have now received a grant from Cornwall Council, the sum of which is as yet unknown. He asked the committee if we wanted to support them financially.
Mike Tonkin posed the question of how much money we have in the club account, to which Mark Travis replied that we currently have £6500, some of which came from the dissolution of COGS as opposed to membership fees and furthermore we still had funds tied in the kit stock. Jon proposed a donation of £2000 to Wheal Velocity and Mike noted that this would leave adequate funds in the account if we needed to order more club kit. Mike suggested a donation from the club may encourage individuals to donate and Beth Berriman echoed that this could encourage other cycling clubs to donate too. Sarah Tregear commented that the club facilities at Wheal Jane were in need of improving from their current standard.
Mike said that donating to Wheal Velocity had been discussed on a recent club run and response had been positive, to which Beth added she had received a message from Rob Ings in support of donating.
Jon proposed a donation of £2000 to Wheal Velocity, which was seconded by Mike and all 8 committee members present voted unanimously for the donation. Ordinary Members present at the meeting added support and no objections.
Charity Ride: Mark suggested that members may like to donate cakes to this years event on 31st August. It was agreed that the best cake could be voted for and this would be the club bake off award this year, with an additional prize of a British Heart Foundation cycling jersey.
Jon has plotted an inaugural off road ride following interest from Wheal Velocity for this. He added that there were members of Wheal Velocity who do not permit the use of their image in publicity and social media and therefore cautioned the use of their images, without first checking for consent from Wheal Velocity.
Sarah asked about the road route and Jon replied that there were two routes on offer. He also suggested having club ambassadors or group leaders at the event but discussing this nearer the event.
A.O.B. Jon Butt commended the 7 members of the club who have entered the National 10 mile Time Trial to be held in Cornwall on 31st August.
Mike suggested a new venue for the annual club pasty ride, given that Geevor have stopped stocking pasties. He explained that the Wellington Inn in St Just has bicycle parking and is near a pasty shop. Stuart suggested the Cornish Oven in Scorrier as an alternative and Jon suggested Chiverton. No decision was made.
Darren Rundell talked about the next away day he is planning for the club, this will be on September 7th, meeting 9.30am at Lanhydrock for a 35 mile ride.
Jon said, as there is no club hill climb this year, the club hill climb award will be decided at the Mount Wellington Hill Climb on Saturday 14th.
Further dates are: Ken Barclay ride on 7th December, Christmas Breakfast ride on 21st December and Club Bake Off August 31st at the charity ride. Sarah enquired about a date for awards evening but this was not decided.
