1.Chairman’s report
Jon thanked everyone, especially committee members, for everything the club achieved over the last year despite difficult circumstances. He described the Tour of Britain as the highlight of the year which included, seafront crit racing in Penzance, with club member Josef Fitzgerald winning his race and hours of volunteering by club members, and watching the rollout of the race itself.
He went on to mention the new club banners which were organised by member Lloyd Peters which have been used at various events including the Tour of Britain, at Men an Tol for the GBDuro and at the Carnon Downs Time Trial, for which he thanked Anthony Green for organising.
He explained, that in addition to club involvement in time trialling and road racing, members have been involved in a wide variety of cycling including; the Dartmoor Classic in challenging conditions, the West Kernow Ride organised by member Phil Whitehorne and a record number of members entering the Redruth cyclocross. He spoke also about the social events of the Bake off and Awards/Roller racing evening, which was held more informally at Penzance Football Club as a consideration to member safety during the pandemic.
Looking forward to 2022, he said that there would be taster sessions at the developing cycling facility near Newquay and he was training to be a commissaire. He added that the club was holding open time trials this year but there was a need for more support in these events and hoped that more club members would step up to support them.
2. Treasurer’s report
Mark said that although it had been a bad year due to not having membership fees, the accounts looked good. He said that at the start of the year there was £8900 in the account and £8100 at the year end.
He went on to extrapolate that this was despite the club having spent £1000 on kit during the year, including new banners and also funding awards, awards engraving, paying for volunteer’s expenses/fuel and the Tour of Britain event at the Yacht Inn.
He explained that there had been a notable increase in club income from time trialling.
He reported that the awards evening had cost £100, whilst in previous years it had been around £300.
Finally, he suggested that by investing in racing and social events the club could profit and that members could request potential funding for these from the committee.
3. Membership secretary’s report
David Goodrich was not present but sent a message that he is happy to continue as membership secretary. Jon thought the club had around 120 members. Beth explained that there had been some recent new members and the committee needed to decide when fees were due and which new members would be exempt from paying. The committee agreed that 2022 membership fees would be due on 1/2/2022 and that all new members from September onwards would be exempt.
4. Social secretary’s report
Joanna reported that there had been 2 successful events this year; the Tour of Britain Yacht evening and Awards evening. Several members of the committee felt it would be good to plan another social event for the Spring to gel different groups within the club and any suggestions from members would be considered.
5. Time Trial Secretary’s report
Anthony gave thanks for support with time trials especially to Jon Butt, Beth Berriman, John and Kay Fazakerley and all the marshalls then gave the following report.
2021 was a challenging year with cancelled events and a run away rider who almost crashed into a Pedestrian on the S45 but Penzance Wheelers pulled it back and we built super strong relations with the late Ken Robertson, cycling time trials and proved to be the strongest race club in Cornwall according to CTT. We held many great events which raised good money for great causes. We also built great community relations and stepped up with some last minute events where other clubs failed. Sadly in 2021 we also made losses on two events and this is very disappointing from an organisers point of view. In 2021 our strongest events were the Hill Climb with 34 riders, the brand new Laddock 15 mile solo time trial which gained 42 riders but our biggest event and the one we should be most proudest of is the Carnon Classic which had 45 riders and a crowd of 150-200 people watching. The event which was won by former Professional Chris Opie and our very own Beth Berriman raised over £600 for good causes. The weather was kind and the atmosphere was electric and will not be forgotten easily. Sadly, the TT committee last year never took off and the success of the events was only made possible by our club members stepping in as Marshalls etc. For personal reasons after three fantastic years I will sadly be stepping down as TT Secretary. This is not to say in future years I would not be keen to return to the role again but for this year I need some more time with my young family. I've had time to plan for this and also time to plan for a smooth transition with a new TT Secretary. The measures I've put in place are the following: Dates are all set for 2022 Paperwork is all filed for 2022 Halls are all booked for 2022 Help and guidance will be given from myself when needed throughout the year. On a final note, I feel it’s important to remember that Penzance Wheelers grass roots will always be a race club and without the racing the only real funds are membership. I do wish Penzance Wheelers every success moving forward, continuing to be the great club it has always been.
The committee thanked Anthony for his hard work. Jon suggested meeting with members interested in taking on the role. Beth suggested that perhaps they would prefer to meet in person as opposed to via zoom. Beth also expressed the need to do this soon as it is essential to have a time trial secretary to receive and provide communications to CTT. Anthony agreed to receive them in the short term only and also would be available to advise a new secretary/secretaries and attend a meeting with them.
6. Kit Officer’s report: Ed was not at the meeting but sent the following report which Beth read out:
In terms of kit, I currently have Endura short sleeve men’s summer jerseys for £50 each as follows
9x medium
11x small
1x Extra large
We have sold out of size large and I will see about placing an order for 10x large jerseys soon for delivery in time for the warmer season.
I also have two of the Parentini intermediate winter jerseys in size small left over from Lloyds order of them from about 5 years ago. Selling at discounted price of £75.
I also have various ‘Old Style’ kit design items left over from years ago, all now at discounted rate. Details on the attached pdf.
Frankly, this is probably ‘dead kit’ which is unlikely to sell since it is the old style and we don’t actually advertise it.
Obviously, all the NoPinz kit is still available for club members to order direct from the NoPinz website.
I am happy to stand again as the kit officer for another year.
7. Election of officers
Apart from TT secretary, all of the committee members were happy to stand again for their posts and there were no new nominations.

8. A.O.B.
Jon postulated that communication within the club may not be optimal as only 20% of email communications sent to club members via the British Cycling club manager are opened. Paul commented that some users may block return notifications of opening emails therefore the number of read emails could be higher. Lloyd wondered if some emails are sent to junk email boxes and Andrew wondered if people were dissuaded from opening messages with “No reply to British Cycling”. Both Mark and Mike were happy with communications and said they were greatly improved. No change to communications was made.
Jon hoped the Prostate Ride would return this year and suggested it could include an optional longer loop.
