1.Chairman’s report

Another great year for the club saw us doing an even wider range of events – good group 2 – thanks Roger and group 3 thanks to Stuart stepping up – always difficult relying on same people so would be great to get more ride/group leaders. We’ve had a good mix of racing in multiple disciplines on and off road and the club is really respected among clubs and organisers throughout Cornwall and the wider region. TT sec will talk about TT’s.  Big plans for supporting youth cycling with the Carnon Youth stage race in May – really need club members to support this event. Website calendar is regularly updated as is public Facebook and Strava pages – which all seem to be pulling in lots of interest in the club.

2. Treasurer’s report

Mark circulated information on the balance of the clubs bank account which has remained steady over the past years – current balance £8,431.36, he also  was waiting on membership funds to come over from BC for 2023 – we decided to chase up BC to see if there was an issue with the new account details.

3. Membership secretary’s report

David Goodrich was not present but sent a message that he is happy to continue as membership secretary.  We continue to use the BC club portal currently we have 80 members (there are a few regular members who need to renew membership and 2nd reminders will be sent out before end of this month)

4. Social secretary’s report Joanna has decided to step down and she has been thanked for her hard work in fulfilling this role – we’ve held a few social events this year which have all be popular among members, including Ana’s talk. We also had a great awards night organised by the TT secretary and had a great guest speaker in Chris Opie.

5. Time Trial Secretary’s report:

2022 was a very successful year for Penzance wheelers, between myself and John Morse we organised 7 events which attracted over 300 rider entries which is fantastic during a time that sadly CTT is struggling financially and entries are down across the UK.

Penzance Wheelers was also very dominant in our own riders entering events, out of the entire South West we were the 2nd highest entered club with a total of 130 rider entries finishing just behind Mid Devon Cycling Club.

I was delighted to pick up the organiser of the year award from the South West district secretary, I have had great pleasure in dedicating this award to the club. I have personally enjoyed organising since 2017 and really enjoy promoting fun inviting events for all ability’s. There is no I in team as they say and with great ideas comes a team of helpers that put those ideas into action.

As reward for our efforts over the years, CTT issued a formal invitation to host round 5 of the Merlin National Time Trial series in 2024. On the club’s behalf, I was delighted to accept invitation and work has already started on this event with the early plan to bring the race as close to Penzance as possible, more details will follow over the year ahead.

Myself and Jonathan Butt have spent a great deal of time in the last 6 months on two big projects, the Cornish Cup and the Carnon Classic. Through a good setup and good promotion, the general riders and club’s excitement is very positive and given we already have over 50 entries for our first event on March the 12th I believe our work is paying off.

From 2021 I started making small financial contributions to event helpers, I’m a strong believer in if people are to get out of bed early and drive up to 50miles to marshal a race they should be reimbursed for their time, we base how much we give on how many entries we receive and although the profit raised from each event is less finding the help is a lot easier.

In 2022 time was spent with Beth Berriman training and understanding the CTT systems and organising duties, Beth is kindly organising 3-time trials this year and with the 6- I am organising we have a lot of work ahead of us. As many of our events are now socials as well as races I would like to propose a new committee role of TT/ social events assistant with Beth filling that role, this will help share the work load over the course of the year.

Finally, I would like to thank the club for its never ending support and personally like to thank our chairman Jon for all of his hard work behind the scenes in helping us support and promote successful racing, he goes above and beyond his role of chairman.

6. Kit Officer’s report: Ed was not at the meeting & will be stepping down after 9 years – thank you Ed
We have good range of sizes of Endura stock – plus we still have older style bits n pieces.

7. Election of officers

Members stepping down: Joanna Keverne (social) Ed Joslin (kit), Paul Upton, Beth stepped down as secretary in year but has said she’ll be happy to step into new role as the assistant to the TT secretary.

A couple of pre-existing roles were not filled but these could be soaked up by other members of the committee until new members step up.
Lloyd Peters & Jon Butt will take on the role of handling club kit.
