Minutes for the meeting of Penzance Wheelers Cycling Club 17/09/2024
Committee Members Present: Jon Butt, Beth Berriman, David Goodrich, Lloyd Peters, Mike Tonkin, Sarah Tregear, Mark Travis
Ordinary Members resent: Bob Buckland, Ian Pye, Janet Pye, Dave Phillips, Terry Timms, Andy Williams, Pete Blackshaw, Jim Payne
Apologies: Tristan Harris, John Fazakerley
Club Kit: Jon Butt explained that he was looking into getting new samples of the Endura club kit, including women’s jerseys as currently there is no kit available to fit ladies. Beth Berriman said that she felt it would promote the club and encourage new members, including ladies to join. She said that in previous meetings several individuals had commented that we do not wear club kit in the winter and she explained that it is possible to order samples of gillets and long sleeved jerseys to see if anyone would like to purchase some. Beth agreed to do this. There was debate over the quality of Endura kit. Bob Buckland suggested trying Kalas. Lloyd Peters suggested talking to Primal. Jon mentioned that we still have old style club kit. Beth suggested giving this away at an event: Mark Travis thought we may be able to sell some of it, to which Beth responded that the club could auction the kit alongside another event such as roller racing.
Promotion: Beth said that she thought the club could look at new media outlets, outside social media, to encourage new members, in particular ladies, to join the club. She explained that the club was involved in a lot of excellent events including charity rides, but that these could be used to promote the club further, in part through members being able to access club kit but also as possibly a poster campaign at supermarkets and other notice boards. David Goodrich asked if the website was updated regularly. Jon assured it was and commented that he also shares information about the club on local community Facebook pages. Lloyd suggested that it would be good to direct people to looking at the club online, by other means of promotion. David commented that the club could be featured in the cycling press.
Cornish Cup: The final event of the 10 Cornish Cup events has now been completed – Jon is checking the final results and has organised 20 mugs to be printed for each rider completing the minimum requirement of 6 events. We need to organise a venue for the presentation of the mugs and also trophy for the winner of the Open category plus look at trophy/awards for the winners in the other categories. It was discussed that this could happen alongside another club event, such as roller racing.
Charity Ride: Mark said that £1024 was raised at the charity ride. He said it would be preferable to have a different start and finish location, as was possible at Scarlets historically. Jon thanked Mark for organising the event, Beth added that the event had a good cycling community feel.
Seven Hills Challenge: Jon said that the current organiser had approached him to see if PZW would take over the event. Mark said this would be possible using just giving and the club card reader. Ian said he would stay in touch with the current organiser. The date of this year’s ride is 15/12/24.
Away Days: Beth explained that, at a previous meeting, it was discussed that club funds could be used to provide transport for club cycling trips out of county. Following on from this she has organised an off-road trip to Devon, however using private transport. Jon and Sarah have researched a velodrome trip which is proposed to take place early 2025.
First Aid Course: Jon explained that Oli Masters, who recently ran a course at Wheal Velocity, can run the course £40 per person min of 8 max of 12. St Piran have offered the use of St Piran Café free of charge if they can place a few people onto the course as well. The course is basic first aid and lasts 6 hours (so will probably be on a Saturday). He can also offer an advanced course which is another 4 hours (so could be on the Sunday or another time). Jon thinks the basic course is enough and considers that the club should pay for any members who want to do the course and also pay for a meal at the Café too.
Safeguarding course: Jon is attending an online course through British Cycling as part of their Safer Wheels campaign – this qualification will allow the club to appoint a welfare officer and allow us to accept riders under 18 years of age.
Awards: Beth asked all present to consider what they would like for an awards evening. Several members expressed enthusiasm for it to be held at the sailing club with food from Archie Browns again. She went on to encourage members to suggest speakers they would enjoy and asked to be contacted with any ideas. She shared a list of current awards and asked for members to consider nominations.
Roller Racing: Beth said that she is prepared to organise this in November and asked for venue suggestions. Mark and Mike recommended Ludgvan Community Centre, which she agreed to contact.
Time Trials 2025: Jon took on the role as temporary TT secretary and ran all the CTT 2024 events including the National Classic Series round at Lands End. He thanked all the club members and friends who helped over the past year. He said the closing date for the club to submit any plans for CTT Open Time Trials in 2025 was the day of the meeting but Club time trials date is usually early in the New Year. For various reasons Jon does not plan to run any CTT time trials in 2025 – but is happy to support any club members who wish to run an event. He is also looking at options of collaborating with other clubs to host or support them – but nothing has been confirmed. The AGM for the South West CTT district committee is 1st October 2024. No members present volunteered to run open time trials next year. A few members expressed some interest in running club events although there was hesitancy over liability. Terry asked about police notification and PNF’s were discussed.
Ladies Rides: Beth offered to run a mid-week ladies only ride to encourage more women to consider joining the club.
A.O.B. James Berry, previous organiser of St Eval Road Race, has approached Jon to see if the club would like to run the race on 29th June 2025. Sarah commented that the race made a loss when ran by Wheal Velocity. Lloyd and Jon considered that it could make a loss and only a few club members would race.
