Minutes for the meeting of Penzance Wheelers 4/11/2025
Committee Members Present: Beth Berriman, Jon Butt, Jon Fazakerley, David Goodrich, Tristan Harris via WhatsApp link, Stuart Hunter, Lloyd Peters, Mike Tonkin, Mark Travis, Sarah Tregear
Ordinary Members Present: Sean Cattran, Patrick Duffy, Joanna Keverne, Terry Timms, Andy Williams
Apologies: Pete Blackshaw, Simon Bray, Kay Fazakerley, Ian and Janet Pye
Previous Meeting Follow Up: Jon Butt started by asking Mark to feedback to the committee how much the charity ride raised, which the latter stated was £1230, in addition to £1500 raised by Michael Rosen’s family. Jon went on to update the committee on the donation of funds to Wheal Velocity, the new clubhouse has been completed and opened at an event which around 70 people attended. The pasty ride has been organised by Mike for 9th Stuart explained that Darren’s away day ride didn’t happen because of heavy rain. Beth reported that, as there had been no hill climb in Cornwall this year, she had run a club Strava elevation challenge to decide a hill climb trophy winner. She followed on to report that some members had ridden significantly more elevation as a result although the fallability of an elevation challenge, rather than a hill climb event had led to some keenness to see the return of the club hill climb at Godrevy.
Kit: Beth expressed a feeling that herself and Jon Butt had taken on several committee roles that previously five members were filling, the additional ones being kit officer and time trial secretaries. David offered to take on the kit. There was general debate about club kit: Mike asked if we had a new supplier, to which Jon replied no. Mark reported that NoPinz were now producing an endurance range which could be used as club kit. Jon currently has some supply of kit although this is now mostly ladies kit. There was debate as to the benefits of holding a stock of kit versus ordering online from NoPinz.
Awards Evening: Jon Butt announced that he has contacted Sarah Ruggins as a potential speaker and was awaiting a reply. Several of those present were very interested in this and were keen to hear her talk, even if this needed to be organised at a later date.
Beth asked those present to comment on what format they would like to see for awards evening. She carried on to say that, during her time in the club, it has had different formats with venues such as the Queens Hotel, Tremenheere and Penzance Sailing Club being used. The conclusion was general support for it to be held at Penzance Sailing Club with food from Archie Browns once again. A raffle will be held and entertainment may not be in the form of a speaker, if Sarah is unavailable. Jon Fazakerley suggested Duncan Covey as a speaker.
Beth suggested presenting bespoke club bidons as prizes this year, in lieu of the plaques or mugs distributed in previous years. She had contacted Sid Valley Cycling club, who do similar, for information about their supplier. She said a minimum order of 50 was needed but they could also be raffle prizes or purchased by club members. Lloyd offered to investigate and look at designs.
Racing and events planning: Jon Butt confirmed he would organise reliability rides next year and was also in discussion about rerunning the audax he organised this year.
Following on from earlier discussions regarding the absence of a club hill climb this year, despite some demand for one, Jon and Beth asked those present for input on what they would like to see the club hosting next year and what would they be prepared to organise. Jon explained that we could still hold open TT’s if there was a keen organiser: club TT dates do not need to be set until the New Year. Beth went on to say that we can host open, club or type C events which only club members could attend, but felt the latter was a shame as club members would miss out on the opportunity to mingle with people from other clubs.
Several members present were enthusiastic about Penzance Wheelers running time trials next year. Tristan suggested several new courses near Portreath, St Just and the old A30 and said he would be happy to help organise a TT this year. David Goodrich suggested a course up the Godrevy Hill climb and along to the top of Portreath. Beth said we could simply run a hill climb at Godrevy twice, and that courses local to club members would be preferable. Jon Butt proposed a course from Mount Misery to St Just or riding up to Wheal Velocity and using the circuit there for timed laps and finally suggested we have another meeting in the future to firm up racing plans.
Roast Ride: Beth offered to organise a booking at a pub for a club ride to finish with a roast on 23rd Any groups can attend and a possible venue is the Halsetown Inn where roasts are only £10.
Christmas Lights Ride: Beth had been contacted by club member Janet asking if this would be organised this year, she confirmed, weather permitting.
Night rides: Beth went on to support organised evening on road rides for all abilities and offered to lead one Thursday 13th
Roller racing: Beth asked if anyone would like to run roller racing this year, she offered to deliver the rollers to a venue and suggested Trevines but would like a volunteer to host the event. Mike asked if it needed to be done by a certain date and Jon Butt replied that it could be on any date. No plans were made.
A.O.B. Jon Butt asked for feedback on club runs: Sean commented that the groups depended on who turns up at the meeting point, Joanna added that they formed separate groups naturally with one faster than the other, but then riding and meeting at the same café.
